Commercial Advertising Photography - The Art Of Fooling The Eye - Hobbies - Photography

The first thing you notice about commercial advertising photography is the product, and how fantastic it looks. Successful and effective commercial advertising photographers will be able to create an image which stands out for all the right reasons, grabs the attention of the target audience and communicates the right message almost instantly.

But whilst it's easy to admire the look of the product and the skill of the photographer, in most cases commercial advertising photography is not about what you see, but about what you don't see. You might think that when you look at an advertising image what you're seeing is what the photographer saw, but that is invariably not the case.

Of course, we all know that there are tricks of the trade and many people will immediately assume that any image will have been doctored using a graphics tool such as Adobe's Photoshop, and whilst this may be the case, there's far more going on than meets the eye. One of the first things to appreciate in commercial advertising is that what you see is almost certainly not quite what you would see if you were looking at the product yourself in a shop.

Lighting, the environment and many little known tricks of the trade all come into play, helping to create an illusion which doesn't just look real, it actually looks more real in some cases than it would in real life. For example, if you were looking at a television in a shop then you'd probably either see a whole lot of distracting reflections in the screen, or the television would be on and you'd be watching a picture. In a product image though you're either going to see a screen that doesn't have any distracting reflections in it, or it will look as though it's switched on and displaying a picture.

The trouble is that if you take a photograph of a television, either switched on or off, neither result will look very realistic. So how do product photographers make their images appear to be so realistic, whilst still being entirely different to how a normal photograph of a television would look?

In order to take a photograph of a television switched off commercial advertising photographers will either have a studio which includes a 360 degree backcloth to remove any potentially distracting reflections, or they will edit the image afterwards, replacing the screen with a shaded black rectangle which looks realistic, yet which doesn't even exist as part of the screen in real life. But how about taking a photograph of a television that's switched on?

If you've ever tried this you'll know that the result will look terrible- very fuzzy and half missing. This is because the camera lens sees what your eyes and brain can't see - the fact that the image on the screen is only an illusion created by rapidly flickering lights. So professional photographers will usually take a screen grab from a computer and then superimpose that onto the photograph of the screen to improve the quality. The final image will look just as you expect it to, even though you know that that's not how it would really look if you took a photograph of it.

Effective commercial advertising photography allows us to be fooled, even when we know that what we are looking at can't be real, despite looking very real. The art of illusion and of fooling the eye is a subtle one, because consumers will not be interested in a picture which has been obviously doctored, yet will be enticed by an image which they know can't be completely real. If you're not sure how to achieve the right balance then it's far safer to leave it in the hands of the experts.

How to start an online clothing store in 12 steps - Business - Entrepreneurship

This article is meant to be a very rough outline in the process of starting up an e-commerce based clothing store or boutique. In the high-paced and competitive world of fashion retail setting up your store is just the first step and quite honestly has little bearing on how successful your store will actually be. For example, Bluefly.com has an estimated monthly traffic of 840K, but since going public in 1998 has never made a single year of profit. As of December 31, 2009, Bluefly has an accumulated deficit of $147,468,000. Your guess on how they remain in business is as good as mine, but think of it this way. Even if you only make $1.00 of profit your first year of business, then you are technically doing better than Bluefly.

Please note, many of these steps can be done concurrently. For example, while you are filing your legal forms, you can work on your web design. This is especially true if you are depending on a third-party to design and set-up your website. They may work on a longer time frame than you initially anticipated. I do highly suggest that you just focus on the business plan initially. For example, if you decide that you are going to design your website with a specific concept while you write your business plan, then you just might find after researching that your concept is not what you??re going to move forward with. In this case, you probably spent 40-60 hours on non-productive output.

1. Write a business plan.To be honest with you, when my girlfriend and I launched our website, we did not have a business plan, but we did write one eventually. The simple fact is that if you are planning for success, then you must write a business plan sooner or later. In business school, you write it sooner than later. The business plan is important because it forces you to do research about the industry, your competitors, and your resources. Additionally, it forces you to think deeply about how you are going to succeed in this highly competitive industry. If you think that you are going to be just like Modcloth, then why would you expect to be successful compared to Modcloth when they are working with millions of dollars of venture capitalist funds for a workforce, marketing, inventory, etc. I don??t have an answer for you, but my point is that you have to come up with a plan before investing your life??s savings into this new venture. Also, the business plan is importa nt because it also forces you to estimate how much money you will need and where that many is coming from. The reality is that unless you have real background in finance, you will not be able to build a 5-10 year projected Discounted Cash Flow Model and figure out your WACC, but having some kind of rough idea of your cash flow is better than nothing.

You should also include a plan on how you are going to initially set-up your website. For example, using a subscription-based shopping cart will change your budget than if you decide to use an open-source shopping cart. Also, you should also do your initial research on web hosting companies since they can range from $10/month to over $300/month. My only suggestion is that you get the fastest and most reliable that your budget will allow. Please note, that all I??m suggesting is that you plan what you are going to do as far as web design and hosting is concerned, not that you go out and pay for these services right now. The only expense that you may want to consider at this moment is that for registering a domain name. That??s because they are relatively inexpensive to register and you don??t want to possibly miss out on registering your wanted domain.

You should come up with a budget and plan for marketing, public relations, and search engine optimization. These will most likely be your largest expense heading into the future. Remember, buying inventory is not an expense, it is an asset.

Last, but not least, you also want to plan on order fulfillment. This is just a fancy way of saying how you are going to pack and send your product, as well as what return procedure and policy you will have in place. Will you use USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL? Will you have free shipping, returns, and/or exchanges? These are all things that should be planned for, though will change over time.

2. Apply for a Employer Identification Number with the IRSOnce again, if you are planning for success in the future, then you are going to have to run your business legally. You will need an EIN to open a bank account, apply for a business license, and get a seller??s permit. Just search ??EIN?? in the google search engine and the IRS website should be the first result. When applying for your EIN, you will need to know the legal structure of your business. For example, if your business is going to be a one man or woman show, then you are going to apply as a sole proprietor. If it turns out that you and your mom are going to run the business, then you may choose partnership or decide to incorporate.

3. Pick your fictitious business name, ??Doing Business As,?? and file it with your county clerkOne of the more exciting step in setting up your business will always be picking a name. My girlfriend and chose T.I.L. Darling because before we were officially a couple, she would tell me that in Thailand, her home country, that she and I could never go out alone as even friends. I told her, ??This is London, Darling.?? So, I guess our business name should technically be T.I.L., Darling, to be more grammatically correct. Once you have your fictitious business name, you need to make a pretty good attempt to make sure no one else is using that same name. Otherwise, years down the line when you are making money, you can expect a letter from a lawyer saying how they are going to sue the designer pants off of you.

If your county registrar/clerk has a website with downloadable forms, then search for the DBA filing form, fill it out, and bring it to the county clerk. Otherwise, you will just have to do everything in person. There, you will probably have your first business expense with the filing fee. Your second expense will be the requirement that you advertise your new business name in an approved newspaper or public publication so that if anyone has a problem with your DBA then they can step forward. The county clerk will be able to point you in the right direction for this step.

4. Open a business bank accountAgain, planning for future success, you will want to open up a separate bank account for your business. This way, you can track and easily separate business expenses from your personal expenses, write checks or have transactions under your business name, and just generally feel like a real business.

5. Start designing and setting up your websiteThere are actually a few methods of going forward with your website. I will explore a few options starting from the most costly to the least costly. Even though I would have to question whether or not running an online business if for you, but if you have extremely limited experience with web design or are just not internet savvy, then you may need to do everything third-party. If you realize that you??re going to need someone to design your website, initially set-up your domain and site, then you will probably need to find some kind of subscription based shopping cart. For example, if you have money to spend, then search ??boutiquecommerce?? in the google search engine. This company will do just about everything for you, from web design, domain registration, web hosting, to ongoing support. There are many third-party shopping carts fitting almost any budget. To be honest, I have no experience with any paid or subscription base d shopping cart and so I will limit any opinion I have on them.

Another alternative is to buy a website template designed on top of an open-source (free) shopping-cart platform. Search ??templatemonster?? in the google search engine. Filter your search to include E-Commerce templates and choose ??fashion?? as your category, though you can customize any template to your needs in reality.

On a side note, before you purchase your template, you should set-up your server. During your business plan research, you should have figured out what web host fits best for you, but now is the time to actually spend some money because you will not be able to test your template unless you have a server to upload it to. This also means that if you haven??t done so already, then you will have to finally register your domain name, which is something you should have also figured out in your business plan. Most web hosts will actually register your domain for free, but feel free to use a service, such as godaddy, and you??ll need to change the namerservers to point to your web host.

Once you have your template and web host, then you need to upload your template and start customizing it. You can either use a ??template tuning?? service or if you have enough html, php, and photoshop experience, then you can do it yourself. Unfortunately, this step can be pretty difficult even for somewhat internet savvy users because this is where you will need to learn a little bit about setting up a database, setting up a database user, and how to use an FTP program to upload your site. That??s why some may opt to use a third-party shopping cart, but this option is by far the most flexible and cheapest if you have the time and are willing to learn.

You will also need to figure out how you will accept payment on your website. If you want to accept credit cards, which you should, then you will need a payment gateway. The most popular would be Paypal Pro and Authorize.net. You will need to apply for an account.

Of course, there is the ultimate DYI approach, where you can not only design your own website, but also code your own shopping cart. If this is the case, then I highly doubt you need to read this section of my tutorial.

6. Make Business CardsYes, I actually made this an individual step because you will need a business card to register for trade shows, as well as deal with suppliers. Since you are also working on your website design, it is also more efficient to work on a business card design. Additionally, you need some lead time because printers will charge you extra to expedite printing and shipping. So, if you plan ahead, you can save quite a bit of money.

7. Apply for a business license in your cityOnce again, if your city has website dedicated to business, then you should be able to download an application for a business license. In some cities, you can even apply for a home-based business license. Of course, only fill out a home-based business license if that is your case. Bring or even possibly mail your completed application and filing fee to the appropriate location. The reason I put this step after designing your website is because the business license fee is a yearly fee and so why pay when you are not even close to launching your website.

8. Apply for a Seller??s PermitAt this point, you should be fairly proficient at filing out forms. The last application you should have to file is for your seller??s permit, sometimes mistakenly called a resale license. The seller??s permit will allow you to buy from your wholesalers without paying sales tax, but it also requires you to pay the sales tax on any items sold, within your state, every quarter. Of course, in modern commerce, you are allowed to collect the sales tax from your customers.

9. Figure out how you are going to display your productsBefore you actually source your products, I believe it is wise to first figure out how you are going to display your products on your website. Are you going to use a mannequin, model, or just lay it flat. Will you outsource your product photography or do it right in your bedroom, which is how we first started. If you are going to do it yourself, then you still need to make sure it fits your budget and business plan as far as purchasing equipment. If you are going to need equipment, then now is the time to either jump online or go out and start making a real investment in your business.

10. Plan your product mix and find suppliersWhile you are figuring out how you will ultimate display your products, you will want to start researching where you will buy your products. If you haven??t done so, then you will want to start thinking more about your product mix. Of course, it needs to fit perfectly with your business plan, concept, and budget you already established in step 1. Fashion buying is another topic completely and I highly suggest you read up on it if you can.

After you have some kind of buying plan, it??s time to find suppliers. If you are lucky, then you will be able to catch the MAGIC Marketplace trade show in Las Vegas. They have vendors for vintage inspired clothing, juniors clothing, indie clothing, etc. It is essentially the largest fashion trade show in the USA and maybe the world. If you cannot find suppliers at MAGIC, then I would honestly be surprised. If you cannot wait for the bi-annual trade show, then you are most likely going to need to take a trip to the Los Angeles Fashion District. If you are looking for the glamorous world of designer labels, then you will be spending your time at ??The Intersection.?? At this intersection you will find the California Market Center, Cooper Design Space, Gerry Building, and The New Mart. Here you can find brands such as A.B.S. By Allen Schwartz, BCBG, and Betsey Johnson. If you are in this market, then be sure to bring copies of your business license, business card, and seller ??s license. Also, as an online business, be prepared to be rejected by many showrooms. If you??re like me though, then it should only inspire you to be more successful so that when the time comes you can reject them.

If your price point is a lot lower, then you are going to really want to spend time around the San Pedro Mart area. You will probably find that 80-90% of these wholesalers are not right for your target market, but that only means that you should find 10%-20% that is right and will be able to focus on building those relationships into the future.

Of course, you can always turn to the internet, registering with sites like fashiongo and lashowroom. Additionally, you can contact individual brand sales reps and they should send you line sheets and look books. In fact, this is how most business will be later in the future, but I suggest you visit trade shows and marts to get your feet a little wet.

11. Start product photography and adding content to your websiteSince you should have planned earlier for product photography, this step should be self explanatory. You want to add the products to your website and get it ready for a more official launch.

12. Start your marketing campaign, Search Engine Optimization campaign, and PR campaignAgain, these campaigns should have already been planned in the first step. This step is pretty much a hundred different subjects on its own and so I will not really dive to deep into it. The most rudimentary start would be to submit your site to search engines, such as Google and Yahoo!, sign up for Google Adwords, and start a Facebook and Twitter account. There is probably a good chance that will have to depend on paid advertising to get decent traffic at the beginning, but I highly suggest you plan and budget appropriately.

It might take one day or a whole month, but you??re going to get your first order and at that point you can finally say you really set-up your online clothing store.

Like I said, setting up an online clothing store is just the first step. In reality, you are going to have to learn as much as you can about fashion buying, merchandising, marketing, search engine optimization, html, php, ajax, javascript, analytics, etc.

Freelance Photography: How To Make Money Selling Stock Photography

Sometimes we associate stock photography with some negative concepts such as the photos you see in frames that are on sale at a department store or the photo that comes in a new wallet. Sure, those images did come from a stock photography library but there is so much more to stock photography than that.

You can put a lot of creative energy into building a solid stock photography library that will draw customers who need these images and like your creative eye. Really, if you think about it, stock photography is no different from doing a shoot for a customer. It's just that you are taking the photos in advance of finding the customer and you can sell the same stock photo a multitude of times. And that last part is what makes running a stock photography service a lucrative business to operate.

The demand for stock photography is ongoing and increasing. But in the economic "model" of any marketplace, supply is as important as demand. So to compete for business you need a good, diverse supply. That means your first step in building your stock photography business is to build the "stock". In this situation, quantity counts.

When you start entertaining customers, you want to be able to show them a strong catalog not only of many genres of stock photos but of a good variety of photos for each genre. So if the buyer is looking for floral shots, you don't just have three or four stock photos in that category. You should have dozens for them to pick from. By building a large collection, you vastly increase your chances of making a sale with each customer you entertain.

Don't think that taking stock photos takes the creativity out of the process. In fact, the opposite is true. Really great stock photography screams personality, even if it's just an assortment of floral scenes you are taking. The buyer is looking for a photo that seems to have a story to it, that draws the eye and makes the viewer want to ponder the meaning of that photo.

Sounds a bit like art photography, doesn't it? Well, in a way, it is. Just because you are selling the photo as part of your stock collection, doesn't lower the artistic value of what you are doing. And if your art is going out the door to be used by a customer, it is still being seen by people who will reflect on what you are trying to say with that photo. So to you, the photographer, your artistic calling is satisfied and you have a nice chuck of change in your pocket to boot.

Along with building a strong portfolio of quality pictures of each category, make your categories as diverse as possible. View other stock collections and gather ideas for the genres they have represented and of the diversity of shots and settings they have included in their collection. You are not plagiarizing other photographers work if you are letting them inspire you to do your best work.

A good discipline to build your stock photography gallery is to take a day each week and go out and build one category of stock photos all day long. So you may do floral shots all day one week, photos of automobiles the next and pictures of college students the next.

Now don't forget to get your releases signed if you use human subjects. Even if you just hang out on a college campus and talk students into posing for stock photos. Be sure you pay them something for their work and get a release. In that way if their picture ends up in some very public setting because of how a customer uses it, you are protected from them coming back with their palm up wanting more.

Finally, trust your instincts on what to include in your gallery. Your artistic "eye" for what you like is probably pretty reliable and will reflect what interests your customers. Once the gallery is built, then you can go about the "business" of putting together a physical catalog to sell from. And don't forget the option of building an online gallery to sell from. You will need some technical help to get your site up and learning how to sell from it and collect money that way. But this can be a great expansion of your successful and growing stock photography business.

Commercial Advertising Photography - Making The Camera Lie In Order To Tell The Truth - Hobbies - Photography

Commercial advertising photography is an essential ingredient in a marketing campaign, especially where food, cooking and dining is concerned. Restaurants and hotels in particular are always very keen to make sure that their food looks as appealing in the commercial photographs as it does when served up on a plate. You may well be forgiven for assuming that as long as the food is cooked well and presented as professionally as one might expect in a top class hotel that taking a photograph of it was the easy bit.

To some extent, taking a photograph of food is easy, but of course the difficult part is to make sure that the food still looks as good on film as it does on the plate. Unfortunately as many amateur photographers have found to their cost, this isn't necessarily the case. In fact any restaurant or hotel which has taken their own in house advertising photographs in order to save money will be sorely disappointed with the quality. It seems quite unfair that something so delicious should be so difficult to photograph.

For example, let's take a nice roast Sunday lunch, steaming hot, with gravy poured over the wonderful plate of food. A few photographs and the job is done, or so you might think. The problem is that when you look at the photographs several things seem to be missing. First of all, the steam has gone. When the meal was presented to you it was steaming hot, literally, but the problem with steam is that it doesn't actually last very long, and often it will disappear in seconds once the plate is served up. So how do professional commercial product photographers manage to get such fantastic pictures of food which looks so hot?

One of the inside trade secrets is actually cotton wool balls. By soaking these in water and then popping them in the microwave it is possible to place these surreptitiously behind items on the plate, creating wonderful plumes of steam which last for ages and produce steam dense enough to come out in the photograph. So next time you see a professional photograph of a steaming plate of food, you'll be less taken with the idea of tucking in to a plate of cotton wool.

The gravy is another problem though, because on the plate it looks wonderful, but in photographs it looks fairly bland - a bit like muddy water perhaps. How do professional commercial photographers achieve the glossy, appetising look? The answer is that they don't use gravy. The gravy in commercial advertising photography images is nothing more than ordinary grade motor oil. So with motor oil poured lovingly over a plate of cotton wool buds it's rapidly becoming clear that a commercial product photographer is not actually taking a photograph of a plate of food in order to produce a photograph of a plate of food.

Clearly this is where the amateurs are going wrong, and why those hotels and restaurants who do employ the services of professional photographer manage to have advertising images which look so appetising and appealing that people's mouths are drooling even before they've sat down. From deodorant aerosols used to add a frosty look to grapes, to hairspray which can make cake look moist, and from toothpicks holding items of food in just the right position to mashed potato squirted under the skin of poultry to make it look extra plump and tender, commercial product photography is not about taking quality photographs of products, but creating images which represent or suggest the product itself, which often means making the camera lie, just to recreate what would otherwise be seen for real. Does the camera lie? Yes, but only to ensure a more accurate image.

Considering Of Fashion Photography School - Shopping - Fashion Style

Do you have a knack for taking photographs and a love for fashion? Perhaps attending fashion photography school is something you may want to consider. Fashion photography school teaches you how to use photography to take photographs that sell everything from perfume to clothing.

Fashion photography is not as easy as it looks. Many men dream of going into this field so they can mingle with beautiful models and take photographs of them. This is not what fashion photography is about. Fashion photography is an art form. The models may be lovely, but they can only look as good as the fashion photographer makes them out to be.

There are many tricks used in fashion photography. Lighting. Wind. Shadows. We see this on television whenever we watch programs about people taking photographs of models. But what people do not realize is that the photographer is an artist. He sees the model in a certain way and photographs her to portray this image he has in his mind. It is not unlike painting a portrait. In a way, he is painting a portrait. He is just doing it with a camera.

Each of us perceives different sights in our mind. Not all of us can see what the fashion photographer can see. This is why it is so important that he or she be proficient and serious about this art form. This is not just a way to take pictures, but a way to make art. Art that does not hang on walls, but is depicted on magazine covers and billboards and on television. But it is still art, just the same.

In addition to taking the best shots of beautiful models, a fashion photographer must be mindful of props and backdrops and locations. He or she will often take advantage of different situations in nature to create the most beautiful photographs. They will use natural and artificial lighting to make the image they have in their mind come to life.

Props are often used and are very important in the work of a fashion photographer. Fashion photographers often work for advertising houses or directly for magazines that are selling a certain product. The product must be photographed in such a way that it is desirable to the viewer of he photograph. While we often think of fashion photographers as photographing models, sometimes the models are merely the props. The real image he or she is trying to convey is the pillow, or the sofa, or the draperies. He sets the scene, like an artist, and makes it appealing to view.

Of course, fashion photographers first and foremost must know quite a bit about photography. Photography in itself is an art form. They must know about cameras, lighting and equipment. They must know when to shoot in black and white and all about color. They need to know which colors will be best for the model to wear in a certain scene.

This is not a career for men who want to meet models, but an admirable profession for a serious professional who has an eye for art, loves photography and has a deep admiration for fashion. It can be a very rewarding career, both monetarily and spiritually as it truly does give one the chance to express his or her creativity. If you are the type who loves photography and fashion, consider attending fashion photography school.

Career in Photography - Art - Visual Art

Photography is an art of capturing images. Photography works on architecture, science and fine arts. It allows one to express one's own emotions and feeling. Unlike a painter, who is in direct contact with his subject and his canvas, a photographer is separated from his subject by the camera and from his "canvas" by computers and printers today and by darkroom equipment previously. The photographic art work, or image, is usually a fine print that has been mounted, framed, or published in a book. Part of the confusion about photography as an art arises because most prints appear to be straight replications of reality. It would seem that the photographer is just an "operator" of photographic equipment which "lifelessly" reproduces some real scene onto a permanent picture. On a summer day in 1827, Joseph Nicephore Niepce made the first photographic image with a camera obscura. Before Niepce people just used the camera obscura for viewing or drawing purposes not for making pho tographs. Niepce placed an engraving onto a metal plate coated in bitumen, and then exposed it to light. The shadowy areas of the engraving blocked light, but the whiter areas permitted light to react with the chemicals on the plate. When Niepce placed the metal plate in a solvent, gradually an image, until then invisible, appeared.

However, Niepce's photograph required eight hours of light exposure to create and after appearing would soon fade away. Louis Daguerre was the inventor of the first practical process of photography. Photography is a very important tool that is used to capture our present into the photographs. It allows us to relive the past and in a way to keep in touch with the past. Photography gives us the means with which to share our lives and our loves with the rest of the world. Whether it is nature, sports, portraiture and other forms of photography we get a chance to express how we feel about the subject matter by the way we photograph it. Polaroid cameras have given photography a new level as it is used allows to take instant images. It is one form of relaxation for people nowadays and hobby for many others.

Photography is important for business too. In real estate, aerial photography will capture the area of the estate which will make it easier for them to make their clients see the whole estate. It is an important marketing tool also because advertisements and some marketing materials need to include high quality, accurate and clear photos to make their ads effective. Brochure should contain photos of what is being offered. Astronomers also rely on photography especially observational astronomy that needs to check the activity of the sky day and night. Stars and even planets are good subjects for photos because man is mostly fascinated by the heavens. In the fashion industry, photography helps a lot in promoting the latest trends and styles in fashion. It makes people aware of the beauty of fashion.

Nature photography deals with letting people know and appreciate the beauty of nature by photos of wildlife, natural scenes and flowers among others. Special events in life such as weddings, debut, anniversaries and baptism are being treasured in memory because of photographs. It has certainly increased the demand of photographers now days. It is no more just a passion or hobby it can be a profession too.

Aerial Kite Photography - Nailing A Camera To The Sky - Hobbies - Photography

Ever flown a kite or taken a photograph? Well, that's most of us isn't it! No wonder aerial kite photography holds such a fascination for so many people. More correctly, it's known as Kite Aerial Photography, or KAP, which is less of a mouthful.

Some have theorized that it's part of our human nature to want to see things from the air. Consider the fact that aerial views of cities and landscapes were sketched or painted long before any flying machine was invented!

The hobby of aerial kite photography got started in earnest around the mid 1980s. However, the very first examples of such photos date back to not long after photography itself was invented. In 2007, KAP is more popular than ever. The subject matter varies widely, but buildings and landscapes are particularly popular.

Digital cameras are widely used in aerial kite photography. In fact, their use in KAP has pretty much stayed in step with their acceptance by the general public. Initially, the cheaper cameras just couldn't take a decent picture compared to a 35mm film camera. As we all know, that is not the case now! Some digitals are very small and light, which is an advantage for doing KAP.

At the cheapest end of the scale, disposable cameras combined with ice triggers and balsa wood cradles enable small, cheap kites to be used. On the other hand, this approach allows bigger kites to take pictures in very gentle breezes which wouldn't allow heavier gear to stay airborne.

Some enthusiasts are after quality at any cost. Hence, they spend many hundreds of dollars on high-end cameras, radio-control gear and special equipment to suspend it aloft with a minimum of movement. The R/C gear allows the camera to be panned around to get the best shots, and the shutter clicked on command.

Some Aerial Kite Photography Highlights

Here's just 3 of the more notable activities of these photo-artistic kite fliers:

A quite famous aerial photograph was taken from a kite in 1906, documenting the San Francisco earthquake. A KAP enthusiast named Scott Haefner did a re-shoot of this striking picture, close to its 100th anniversary.

A small group of experts known as Team Drachen made good use of some grant money by using KAP to document whale behavior. This took place at San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja, in Mexico.

In November, 2002 a 360-degree panorama of the San Andreas Fault was created from KAP images.

Aerial Kite Photography - The Equipment

You've probably gathered by now that this hobby requires a kite, a flying line, and a camera. It might come as a surprise to learn that the camera is usually suspended from the flying line, not the kite itself.

Although other types can and are used, flow-form kites are very popular in kite photography. With no spars and therefore no assembly required, you can just turn up somewhere and get your camera in the air immediately. These kites are convenient to transport as well, since they roll up into a small bag. Another advantage is that they are tolerant of quite strong winds.

Interestingly, zoom lenses are of little use in kite photography. In fact, people often try to cram more scenery into the field of view by using wide-angle lenses, even fish-eye lenses. Another popular technique is photo-stitching, where a number of images are combined into one super-wide panorama.

Aerial Kite Photography - Accessories

A piece of gear commonly used by serious KAPers is the Picavet, an arrangement of lines and pulleys. Yes, it was invented by a Frenchman, in the early 20th century. However, it wasn't until the late 20th century that it was re-discovered and put to widespread use in KAP. It's purpose is to provide a stable and self-leveling platform for the camera, while suspended from the flying line. Some aerial photography enthusiasts add other devices such as vanes and porous sheets to reduce the movement and give even more opportunity for getting good pictures.

Finally, it's handy to know what the average wind strength is. With a little device called an anemometer or wind speed meter you can decide what kite and camera rig to put up. In stronger winds, it can help you decide whether to attempt flying at all. Kites and cameras can get lost when the flying line snaps!

Flower Photography Tips - How to Take Great Photos - Hobbies - Photography

To succeed at flower photography, you won't need any fancy equipment, but you will need to pay attention to detail. Learning how to take sharp, crisp beautiful pictures of flowers like the ones we see in garden catalogs and magazines is really pretty easy with a digital compact, and this article shows you how.

Many of us have had the experience of taking a picture of a pretty flower that seemed picture perfect.

Another problem many new flower photographer enthusiasts find is that their pictures come out blurry and out of focus.

These are all things that are easy to avoid.

The first thing to do is plan to take your flower pictures when the lighting is good and the wind is still. Even a gentle breeze can cause the flower to move enough to blur your picture. Usually the calmest time of day is around dawn. Dawn is also the time when you can usually find the best lighting.

But if you don't want to get up early, you can still get great flower pictures. Other good times for lighting are the hour before sunset and anytime there is high overcast (bright overcast). These times provide soft light without the harsh shadows. The times just after dawn and before sunset add a warm glow. And if it's a little windy, you'll need to set up a blind or a temporary windbreak.

The other big reason for out of focus flower pictures is from using improper camera settings. Depending upon how close you want to get to the flower, set your camera to either Portrait or Macro. The latter allows you to shoot from within one inch to a foot (check the camera's manual). If you're using a camera with manual settings, choose a wide aperture (a small F Stop number). All of the settings just discussed will make the flower more sharply focused but will make the background more fuzzy.

Let's look now at turning that pretty flower into the perfect subject for your photo.

* Look for a flower with undamaged petals. You can also "pretty" up a flower that may have 1 or 2 ragged petals, by simply removing the petals. If doing so will leave a noticeable space, look for another flower. * Look for tiny bugs and loose particles like dust, and then remove with them with a soft, makeup or artist's brush. * For a dewy look, gently sprinkle or spay the petals with a few drops of water.

Next it's time to compose your picture.

* Look at the flower from different positions to see what angle looks best in your viewfinder or preview LCD. You might see a shadow that is pleasing - or not so pleasing. Notice how the light plays from different angles. You should also look at taking your picture from different angles or vantage points. Try standing directly above the flower and then try lying on the ground to see which angle looks best. * Don't cast a shadow over the flower. If the flower is back lit, you can avoid lens flare by wearing a broad brim hat or by using a lens shade to block light from entering the lens. * Also look at the tones in the background. Contrasting tones will make your image pop.

Once you find the best angle to take the flower, fill the viewfinder with the flower and use classic composition methods like the "rule of thirds" to position the flower in the best position in the camera frame.

Once you have your picture composed how you want, focus on the part of the flower that you want to be the most focused. Then holding very steady, press the shutter.

As you can see, flower photography is all about detail. And how you display your beautiful flower images also matters so make sure to display it in a picture frame that nicely offsets the flower.

Beginning Photography Tips - Hobbies - Photography

As a beginning photographer, it is easy to get discouraged when your pictures come out too dark or constantly blurry. It's easy for the beginning photographer to quickly become overwhelmed; especially when professionals are spouting off terms like shutter speed and aperture. However, with a little more understanding, and a little practice applying those terms, the beginning photographer can quickly and easily be on their way to capturing that perfect picture. Here are the most common photography terms and some helpful hints for applying them in your photography.

Shutter Speed refers to the amount of time that the shutter is open and light strikes the CCD (Charge Coupled Devices). This device converts the light entering through the lens into electric signals and creates the digital image. Shutter speed can be adjusted along with the aperture to more effectively capture the subject image. Slower shutter speeds means that the shutter is open longer and more light is getting in. Try shooting a few pictures of water like waterfalls, rivers, and fountains using a slow shutter speed. This effect can enhance water images. Faster shutter speeds means less light is getting in. This can create a freezing effect on fast moving objects. Try shooting some action shots at your favorite sporting event with a faster shutter speed.

The Aperture works in correlation with the shutter speed. Often referred to as the aperture value (AV) it increases or reduces the thickness of the light beam passing through the lens to the CCD. Opening the aperture reduces the AV and closing the aperture increases the AV. The best place to experiment with AV is in the garden. Open the aperture and focus on a flower. The objects around the flower (closer and farther than the focused subject) will be more out of focus, emphasizing only the flower. Now close the aperture while focusing on the same flower. The range of your focus expands forward and backward allowing for the objects around the flower to remain in focus.

A common enemy to the beginning photographer is Camera Shake (Blur). This is pretty self explanatory. It is when the camera moves while the shutter is open creating a blurred image. Often times adjusting to a higher shutter speed from a low one will solve this problem.. If that doesn't work, try raising the aperture as well and be sure to use a flash. If your images are still blurry you may need a tripod to capture a clear image. Most of the newer digital and DSLR cameras on the market come equipped with anti-shake features to help combat this problem, but it's good to know what causes it and how to fix things if you have an older model camera.

As one beginning photographer to another, don't let the terminology scare you. By just doing a little bit of reading and some experimenting with different settings on your camera, most obstacles can soon be overcome. It is a bit of a trial and error process, but when you capture a picture of your daughter mid-air, hair standing up, grinning from ear to ear, as she jumps rope, it all becomes worth it.

Basic Photography Tips - Art

There are countless techniques and skills in photography that you can learn. You may learn them through magazines or the internet. Learning through experience is way better than anything else though. Because of the digital age, photographers can now analyze and assess the photos they have taken even after taking the shot. This article will teach you how to become an excellent photographer.

Number one thing that you can do is to take every chance to shoot outside for photos. The natural light you get from the sun creates a better picture as the lighting is perfect to produce clear images. The built-in flash of your camera is useful under such circumstances especially in low light conditions but photos are more lively if taken under natural lighting. Some of my best photos shoots of my San Diego photographer service have come from natural lighting.

Second thing that you can do is to try shooting images from various angles and positions. Firing squad photographs are quite pass and boring. Instead, capture the subject as if it's in the edge of something. You can also try capturing your subject close-up. What is important is that you get the hang of taking photos using the different angles available for you. This has been one of the keys to success in my wedding photographer San Diego service.

The third thing you should know is to properly zoom when capturing photos. Zooming on your subject helps create a more detailed picture. But beware that you must not zoom too close to avoid producing blurry pictures. But learning how to zoom in and out of shots will help you create more vivid photos. This has been an important aspect of my San Diego commercial photography business.

Lastly, you must learn to how to choose great backgrounds. Natural backgrounds, specially those from mother nature will be perfect for any shot. Be sure though that you check if the area is high in traffic. Consider checking any distractions that may take away from the subject in the picture. There are specific shoots though that you will need a highly traffic prone area where there are lots of activities and people so make sure that you know how to focus well on your subject.

These are the four things that any photographer needs to develop. Always refer to these four points when taking pictures and remember to apply them.

This should be the normal or standard procedure - discuss with your wedding photographer the events of the day, your requirements like family photographs, the mportant moments you want to be captured, group photos, the types of photos you would like, etc, as well as wedding locations for a photo shoot.

More importantly, get to know each other. It is important that both parties understand each other's personality. Photography Tips for Beginners - Education

Photography as a means of artistic expression in educational institutions can contribute effectively to develop aesthetic sensibility, stimulating the creative imagination and stimulate a reflective appreciation of the visual aspects surrounding the student. This document contains some basic photographic composition, accompanied by a series of best practices to achieve the students' development of the photographic technique and imagination.

The basic notions about the composition of an image are a must have in mind who stands behind a camera. The understanding of certain technical terms such as volume, rhythm and texture, among others, will "see" and compose better pictures knowingly images. The practice of these concepts will help students develop their ability to perceive and interpret critically the images of the surroundings, refined aesthetic sensibility and increasing environmental awareness as factors that contribute to quality of life.

In the photograph, the organization is the first element of the plastic-visual language with which the student should be familiar. The camera, unlike the human eye of a scene reproduced without discrimination everything that appears in the frame. Because of this, beginners are surprised when unexpected things or people appear in his photographs: lines that cut a landscape, or in the foreground an arm without a body or a power line. Often this happens because the photographer does not notice these elements during the siege, by being focused on your point of interest.

The scrutiny of the eye is something that the photographer should impose on the image with selective focus or changing the point of discharge to disappear uninteresting detail, smearing (using the depth of field), to hide or be made subject to overall composition. To achieve this we must learn to look like camera and not as a person looking at a scene that focuses on what interests him, ignoring the rest.

The strength of a formal image often lies in the relationship of the elements that make up the imaginary lines that divide horizontally and vertically into three equal parts. Those with the foreground, middle distance and background clearly discernible particularly effective if these areas are thirds. The intersection of horizontal and vertical two thirds is a good location for the center of interest. The view from here you can pan across the image along lines and curves or touring secondary care centers.

Using photography, students can express their emotions, ideas and feelings, observing your surroundings. The more complicated is what we are observing, the more important to determine a viewpoint and an angle to clarify the picture and illustrate exactly what is intended. Every time you take a picture you have to wonder what is meant and analyze these intentions consciously rather than leaving them to chance or intuition. For example, when you tilt the camera down and to take away from this point disadvantage any fund or eliminated the foreground. Try a different angle. Be creative. Crouch down and see the subject of a new form, take your time to find the best angle. Decide whether there are elements irrelevant distractors, excludable or concealed from another position. Testing various sampling points is easy to see that you can get to the bottom of the essence of the subject. Critical reflection on what you see is a vital part of the exploration process.

On the other hand, it is easy to forget the importance of certain details at the time of context and establish a range of sizes in a photograph, which requires the viewer to concentrate on not to leave out anything important. Thus, the size of the subject will only be obvious if the image is contained something of known size to compare it, as a person.

Bridal My Wedding Photography Tips - Travel

Last but certainly not least familiarize yourself with the timing of the wedding day. Ask your bride and groom for an order of events and make a point of reading over it. Being in the right place at the right time is key to capturing the action of a wedding. Armed with knowledge of the days events you will be in a much better position to anticipate where you will need to be, thus maximizing valuable shooting time.Photographing a wedding can be really stressful, chaotic even. Yet with the right preparation you can help the day run as smoothly as possible. It is up to you to put the time and effort into obtaining the knowledge you need. The film versus digital debate has been at the forefront of professional photography over the last decade or so. As digital technology has seen numerous advances, many photographers have slowly moved to exclusively shooting digital. These same photographers once shot film, now to most of them film is all but dead. Traditionally wedding photogr aphers worked exclusively with film, with most of them shooting a mix of 35 mm and medium format, using both color and black and white emulsions. Whilst this is a combination that has served wedding photographers well for decades, it is perhaps not the most viable option in today's world, for both financial reasons and in terms of workflow, time and quality. With the introduction of digital camera technology the industry has seen huge changes. These days the cost of film and processing can be prohibitively expensive. Availability is generally limited to a small number of remaining professional labs and prices for film are steadily increasing as the demand lessens and production drops accordingly. Recent years have seen the closure of many film manufacturers and those that do still exist have ceased producing all the emulsions they once did. It is however, not only for financial reasons that one may consider film to be the lesser option for photographing a wedding. As digital t echnology has advanced the image quality continues to progressively improve. Initially digital camera technology could not match the quality of film, and to some extent this judgment on digital cameras has stuck in people's minds, and they continue to assume film will be better quality. There is however more to this story. If we were to consider large format film it is true that this can still outshine the quality of digital - the reality is however that such a format is not suitable for many applications, wedding photography included. Thus we must compare apples with apples to make a fair comparison. The majority of wedding photographers shooting film will be shooting 35 mm with a mix of medium format. The current top end digital cameras produce images of higher quality than 35 mm film capability, and can be said to rival medium format. Now, if we look at a common situation encountered at a wedding, low light, we can take this debate further. In order to take photographs in low light settings one needs to use a high ISO. Essentially this is a measure of the film/digital sensors sensitivity to light. High ISO film is traditionally extremely grainy - think of the old photojournalistic photos shot on high speed black and white film.

Turntable for 360 degree product photography - Business - ECommerce

360 degree product photography is a so delicate and involved topic because products come in so many shapes and sizes. Some may be very reflective, some may have dimensions that will prevent you from simply dropping them on a turntable, and some may have features that can be only highlighted when shot from a specific angle while hanging from the top and with a certain lighting setup.

The more constraints you have in your 360 photography setup the less options you get at your disposal for creating smooth 360 product views. It's also very important to be able to quickly assess how your product appear from different angles with a given setup before you start on the actual production of 360 product images.

So before you go ahead and spend your hard earned money on a computerized equipment (which is invaluable if you do this commercially), here's a simple guide for building a DIY turntable that will likely solve some of your product photography needs. The good news? It will only cost you a trip to a hardware store (Ace Hardware or similar), $40 and an hour of your time to get it all assembled together!

What you need:

So the turn table will be built using two disks of round plywood and a lazy susan bearing attached between the disks to provide a smooth and steady movement. The bearing is tough enough to deal with weights of up to 400-500 lb or even 1000 lb depending on a brand, so the weak link is the plywood. If you go with Shepherd's bearing, they come with pretty good assembly instructions. The key is to find and mark the center on the plywood disks. This is pretty simple as long as the disks are perfect circles:

First, you will need to find something that has a 90 degree corner like a piece of a white paper sheet. Place the right-angle corner of the sheet at any point on the edge of the plywood disk and mark the other two points where it crosses the edges on the plywood. Then draw a straight line between the two marks and connect the marks with a straight line. Now repeat the same procedure using another point on the plywood. The intersection between the two lines is the center of the disk. The rest of the assembly is pretty straightforward - just follow instructions on the bearing package!

Now that the major work is done, you need to decide how many frames your 360 product views will be comprised of. Usually, 20 frames per view gives a nice balance between the total size of the images/download speed and the smoothness of your product rotations. Check-out these sample 360 product views to see if 20-frame 360 animations will work for you:

So to get 20 product shots, the turntable should be able to rotate in 18 degree increments. The key is to mark the top plywood disk in such way that you can easily identify the increments. One approach is to put numbered marks on the side of the disk. Since you already have found the center on the top disk, creating the 18-degree marks is pretty simple with a protractor.

The final step is to attach a piece of white paper on the top of the plywood disk where you will be placing your products and put a measuring mark on the bottom plywood base. Now put your camera on, align it with the measuring mark on the bottom and the center of the rotation, then place your product on the table and you are good to go.

Happy 360 Product Photography!
